Alexandre Tokovine will be speaking at the University at Albany (SUNY),
Humanities Building Room 354 (our usual Albany location), starting at
11:00am.? Interested participants will get together afterward (around
2pm) to continue the discussion over lunch.


Title:? People from a Place: The Classic Maya Place Name Database Project

Abstract:?
The presentation deals with the preliminary results of the place name
database project started in spring 2006. It begins with an outline of
the project and some methodological challenges encountered along the
way. The next segment of the presentation centers on the problem of
understanding Classic Maya spatial categories. The discussion of
spatial categories is followed by a section devoted to place names in
personal names and the role of place in the construction of political
identity in the written narratives. The presentation is concluded by
summarizing the evidence for the notion of geopolitical communities in
the Classic Maya ideational landscape.
