Dear Listeros,

I should have added that the designs appear to me to be Epiclassic (Terminal Classic) in date, in some ways similar in form and execution to the those from Tonina (except with a more Epiclassic Gulf Coast style). The simple presence of Preclassic / Formative figurines (that I mentioned in my prior email) may or may not indicate a formative date for the the sculpture itself. We might all have to wait for the final publications of stratigraphic excavations. Sites like Chalcatzingo in Morelos or Dr. Diehl's excavations at San Lorenzo contained substantial Middle Formative AND Postclassic occupations. Therefore, the presence/absence of certain figurines or ceramics cannot conclusively date the sculpture. I have not yet seen any press releases indicating that there is an "x-complex" horizon at Tamtok (indicating a participation in the Early Formative period). Nor have I seen any publications indicating that the massive sculpture necessarily dates to the same strata that
 contained Formative artifacts.
