As the CSM article notes, this story has been percolating along in the Mexican press for the last couple of years (esp. lots of articles in La Journada). For a more detailed history of the competing private and national claims to Chichen I recommend Chapter 3 of Lisa Breglia's book, Monumental Ambivalence (UT Press 2006).
