León-Portilla's source for all this may be found in Book 10 of Sahagún's 
Florentine Codex, or any one of the other versions of his works available in 
Nahuatl (Códice Matritense) or Spanish. The revisionist history mentioned there is 
imputed to Itzcoatl's reign at a time post-dating the victory over 
Azcapotzalco. Unfortunately, Sahagún's "informants" supplied too few details to make much 
sense of what was being done.

But it's a fascinating question.
