NORTHEAST MESOAMERICAN EPIGRAPHY GROUP
John Justeson will speak on epi-Olmec decipherment and the text on a 
Teotihuacan-style mask on Saturday, November 10, 10:00am-1:00pm at SUNY 
Albany, in the Humanities Building Room 354 (our usual venue).

For those interested in background reading, the following short papers 
are relevant:
  Justeson & Kaufman (1993), "A decipherment of epi-Olmec hieroglyphic 
writing", Science 259:1703-1711.
  Kelley (1993), "The decipherment of the epi-Olmec script as Zoquean by 
Justeson and Kaufman", 14.1:29-32.
  Houston & Coe (2003), "Has Isthmian writing been deciphered?", Mexicon 
25:151-161.

On the previous afternoon, Christopher Pool will be speaking on "Polity 
and placemaking at Tres Zapotes, Veracruz", from 3:00pm in the same 
room, as part of the speaker series of the Department of Anthropology 
and the Institute for Mesoamerican Studies at SUNY Albany.
