[Aztlan] Mummy of girl sacrificed by Incans prompts gasps

In precolonial times mummies were shown to the people in public display
in ancient Peru. The handling of dead bodies is well documented in Maya
inscriptions as well. The modern display of ancient mummies is from the
emotional point of view not so dissimilar from the ancient. It is a
contect between living and dead.

Perhaps the interment of the child
was, in fact, "sacred" although it may
have been "profane." Of course,
it is very hard to apply the proper term
because we modern peoples
have no idea what that ancient society was
thinking, much less can we
assign modern sensibilities to them without
data -- and we do not
possess such data.
To my way of thinking, the country-of-ownership has
every right to do as it
pleases. Further, I think it is just as likely
the persons who view the
remains will appreciate the obvious attention
given the child as they might
be appalled at her remains being on
display.
It is difficult to find a reason why anyone would be well-
served by "hiding"
the mummy, re-burying it, or leaving it to the
occasional studies of
so-called "professionals." Knowledge belongs to
the people.
