Dear (overseas) friends,

Is there anyone who can tell me how the ancient Maya about 1500-2000 years ago kept up with their own calendar? If we, modern inhabitants of planet Earth, want to know what's todays date then we simply take a look on the calendar which is the same on almost every place on this planet.

What puzzles me is how the ancient Maya were able to know at any time what date it was. And did all the Maya states/towns/tribes handle the same date at the same time. Did they synchronize with each other. Was there any particular system that the used for this? And who were responsible for this keeping up to date of the Maya calendar: priests, scribes, rulers, or ???

In other words how reliable are de dates on the stelae, lintels, altars, codicies, etc. which we take for granted as facts and starting points.

HOW DID THEY DO IT? I'm very curious.

Greetings,
