Just a reminder to let you know that the program I emailed you about before
- Cracking the Maya Code - is on this Tuesday night at 8:00 PM (not
Wednesday as I had previously said). The PBS website has some very nice
interactive material concerning the program -
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/mayacode/. Nova may show on Thursday night in
some places. In any case, I hope you enjoy the program and get some sense
of why I am so intrigued by this exploration!

> All of you know how enthusiastically I have pursued the study of Mayan
hieroglyphs during the last many years. When we were in Texas for the
annual Maya Meetings this year, we were shown a two-hour version of this
film that was based on the Michael Coe book, "Breaking the Maya Code". The
film mentioned below is a shorter version - 50 minutes, but, even with
editing, the film was very well done. Friday night I had dinner with the
filmmakers. Saturday we saw the film. Cool! What was especially
wonderful was that when we saw the film on Saturday, all of the people in
the film (except for those who were dead, or one scholar who was in
Germany) were in the screening auditorium with us!
>
> What was especially wonderful for me (and I don't know if these scenes
will be cut in the shorter version), there were a couple scenes about Maya
scholars teaching other young Maya students how to read the glyphs. Both
of the Maya scholars who were shown in the film were men that we have
helped come to the Texas Meetings for the last few years, Lolmay Garcia and
Crisanto Kumul Chan. Some of you know that we have had to form a
non-profit corporation to do this, a bigger ordeal than we expected it to
be, but an effort that is working. This past year, we were able to bring
13 scholars to the Meetings, including Lolmay and Crisanto. In the longer
version, the very last scene was of a young boy with a very proud,
intelligent, eager face. He is Crisanto Kumul Chan's son. It was very
special to be with Crisanto just after the film when he was still tearful
from seeing his wonderful son on the big screen!

> So, if you get the chance, please take a look at the film mentioned
below. It is supposed to run on PBS on Nova Tuesday night April 8th,
whenever that shows on your local PBS channel. Enjoy!!!
