David & Fiona,
Karen Bassie summed it up well. Both rivers are navigable for long
distances, and most roads led through Coban.
The Salinas is a lot more direct, but the Pasion leads to some interesting
places like Cancuen and the Candelaria Caves pilgrimage site.
If you were just trying to go to Kaminaljuyu, then up the Salinas to Nueve
Cerros and overland past Coban and Salama would probably have been easiest,
at least in the dry season.
At the height of the wet season, when rivers were high and fast, it might
have been better to skip the rivers altogether. From Altar there would
certainly have been a trail east for 25 km to Dos Pilas. From there, the
historical Chinaja Trail went south to Coban, and it passed close to the
Candelaria Caves as well. These trails were along the spine of the
peninsula between the Pasion and the Salinas, and should have been well
drained and passable in the wet season.

Hi All,
If in 150 Ad I was wanting to travel from Altar de Sacrifice to
Kaminal juyu. which river would be the main route the Salinas or the
Pasion. I have an excellent hydrography for the Usu from Ron Carter. Have
there been any similar studies done on the above mentioned rivers?.
Thanx in advance
