Listeros,
New research on Inca skull surgery published in the American Journal
of Physical Anthropology shows that Inca surgeons were very skilled
in treating head wounds and other skull problems rarely causing
infections or killing their patients. Trepanation emerged as a
surgical procedure 1000 years ago among the Andean people. They cut
squares of bone, bored holes in the skull, scraped away bone or made
circular incisions. No surgical instruments have yet been excavated.
Over time, survival rates rose from one third surviving surgery
during pre-Inca times to 90% during Inca times. The Incas knew how to
avoid cranial muscles and internal blood vessels and used trepanation
to alleviate fluid build up and head wound inflammations. Perhaps it
was used for inner ear infections.
The researchers studied skulls that had surgery performed on them
from 411 skulls from Pre-Inca to Inca times.
