Hi Donna,
Jaroslaw Theodore Petryshyn documented a pilgrimage he made with the Lacandon Maya.
He mentions a Lacandon boy having a bow and dart so he could shoot colorful birds. He
wanted to give his mother some Macaw, and other bird skins to wear in her hair. It reminds
me of the many sculptures we see with Maya headdresses full of feathers. Petryshyn stated
that all married Lacandon women hanged these bird skins from their hair.
You can read a full translation of the pilgrimage in "In the Maw of the Earth Monster,"
