Hi Mario,
According to Houston, Stuart and Taube ("Memory of the Bones" 2006 pages
16-17), these kinds of "god markings" were first written about by Michael
Coe (1973:54). "When they occur - and this is not always routine - they
generally emboss the upper arms and legs, possibly because celts were tied
to those parts of the body in Olmec and later times (Taube 1996. figs.
10-11). The god markings reveal some quality of the surface of the god.
Celtlike disigns show hardness and sheen; watery swirls and scutes indicate
a fishlike surface of rasping scales."
They go one to describe other gods and markings in detail.
