Just a note to clear up a slight misunderstanding
of Carl Wendt's note in INAH's site which Mike
Ruggeri refers to,
http://dti.inah.gob.mx/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1137&Itemid=150
The earliest known use of tar is from El Manatí,
but when Carl mentions the "great commercial port
as demonstrated by the diversity of earthenware
materials..." he is referring to information from
Alfredo Delgado's project in the tunnel at
Coatzacoalcos, much later than El Manatí.
If you want to keep up with recent information on
INAH projects and those of archaeologists from
other institutions, browse INAH's site once a
week or so at the following address:
http://www.inah.gob.mx or http://dti.inah.gob.mx.
They are doing a great job of posting notes on
more or less recent projects.
