FYI and please pass this along to those who need to know:
The handicapped parking regulations at UT are very confusing, but what I
have written below is what I believe to be true. If there are doubts or
questions, I suggest you call (512) 471-7275.
On the University of Texas Campus, "D" spaces are reserved for the
handicapped at all times unless otherwise indicated. In order to park in
these spaces, two things are required:
1. A university disability permit, Class "D" or "TD"-- The TD stands for
"temporary disability permit". I am told that these can be purchased for
the week at a rate of $11 in the Parking and Transportation Services (PTS)
offices. PTS is located in the Trinity Parking Garage (Parking Garage 7),
1815 Trinity St.4:45 p.m., Monday - Friday. These TD permits are necessary
from the hours of 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Visitors with cars that display the
appropriate placards or permits listed in number 2 below may park at surface
disabled spaces after 4:00 p.m. with no University permit. They must display
their appropriately approved state plate or placard. There is no fee for
this parking.
2. Disability license plates, veteran license plates, permits, or
placards issued by the State of Texas, as well as disability plates,
permits, and placards issued by other states
I have also read that A traffic control station (kiosk) guards may issue a
"TD" Permit (Temporary Disabled) for one day to visitors bearing disabled
placards or license plates for visitors, so you might find that asking one
the guards might be helpful until you can get the $11 permit
The other alternative for you is to park in the parking garage spaces for
persons with disabilities for a fee. A person with disabilities plate
and/or permit is required in garage spaces for persons with disabilities.
