A few last words about this thread before putting it to bed. Sundogs are created when sunlight is refracted through ice crystals in high altitude cirrus clouds, but this does not mean that sundogs need be a cold weather phenomenon for the viewer. At 5,000 to 6,000 meters above sea level where cirrus clouds are found, the temperatures are always arctic, even if there is hot steamy jungle below.
Second, sundogs are very common if one just knows where in the sky to look for them. When commuting to Chicago by train before retirement I used to sit in a seat next to the sunrise side of the train going in and in one next to the sunset side of the train when returning home. I would see sundogs almost weekly.
