(The topic of this message is usually recognized under the names
"synharmonic" and "disharmonic" spellings,
but by now that can be seen as not covering the phenomenon.)
Responding to a few requests, now available online is
a chart which I distributed in 2005 at the Austin meetings
organizing the data used to argue for the choice of final syllabogram
in words ending in a consonant.
There have been only the most minor edits to the legend for clarity.
More important, there is an extended discussion of the four hypotheses
which have been considered to explain the distribution of spellings.
Each of at least three of them explains something which others do not,
and each fails to explain something which others do.
And there is a review of the recently posted paper on this topic
by Robertson, Houston, Zender and Stuart, number 62
in the series Research Reports on Ancient Maya Writing.
