Folks:

there is a third point to be made: that these
creatures who have a variety of familiar forms,
people, birds, animals, fish, etc. are there, not as
"gods" or divinities, but only used as images to best
describe their attributes. . . fire, force of
strength, where it was first seen (bird in sky), how
treets and / or corn grows just like people grow,
Green young, yellow adult, then dies or is eaten,
burned or cut up, etc, serpents from underground or
flying in sky. . . . whatever,

The could well be called "entities." This would strip
them of the divinity thing. What we have are images
also: Santa Claus, Turkey, Indian images, fairies,
elves, gnomes, cupids for Valentine Day, Scout images,
soldier images etc. all for various holidays.
Thundercloud birds for storms, a whole range of
animals that can act like humans, but not gods. In
futuristic years when we are all dust, archeaologists
and anthropologists will find our images and probably
call them "gods' also for want of a better
understanding of their uses. We know better now, but
with histories wiped out for one reason or another,
what then?

Everyone tries their best to describe the powerful but
natural forces around us. A story about humanistic
forms is much better to understand than the more
technical aspects of an earthquake, volcanic eruption,
heavy snow storm, flood, hurricane, typhoon, monsoon,
or whatever. Why do we have to call these elements
gods?
