Greetings Everyone,

There are only 6 more weeks before the Maya Meetings at Austin begin. As
many of you know, there are two parts to the meeting – the hieroglyphic
workshops and the symposium. The workshops begin on February 25 and end on
the morning of February 29 as each group presents their summary findings, as
warranted. The symposium kicks-off the afternoon of February 29th with a
lecture by David Stuart. The keynote address, awards announcement and the
reception are scheduled immediately after that. The meetings end on March
2. Please visit http://www.utmaya.org/ to learn more. Registration for
non-UT college and university students is half price (except for the textile
workshop which is full price). Please pass this message along to anyone you
think may be interested.

The following contains more details about the meetings. On February 25th
there will be several levels of 4 day hieroglyphic workshops where Maya
specialists and scholars, as well as people from all walks of life come to
exchange information and learn about recent discoveries in Mesoamerican
archaeology, iconography and Maya hieroglyphic writing. On the morning of
Friday, February 29th all the workshop groups will gather in one classroom
to present their results.

Here is a list of the hieroglyphic classes offered:

-Beginning Maya Hieroglyphs

-Intermediate Glyphs - Copan (Prerequisite: Maya glyphs or language) -
facilitators are Boot and Tokovinin

-Advanced Maya Glyphs and Grammar (Prerequisite: Maya glyphs or language) –

Velasquez-Garcia

-Iconography/Maya Vases – facilitators Kerr and Steinbach

-Yucatan & Chilam Balam – facilitator Bruce Love

After the workshops, a 2 and ½ day symposium begins. Our keynote speaker
will be the distinguished Mayanist and archaeologist, Michael Coe, Prof.
Emeritus from Yale University. The symposium will focus on the Maya ruins
of Copan, Honduras and there will be a detailed presentation about the
latest advances to reconstruct and decipher the great hieroglyphic stairway
and its associated sculptures. There will also be a free lecture by Rudy
Larios and David Stuart on Tuesday the 26th of February.

In addition, there will also be a photographic and a textile exhibit, as
well as graduate student poster sessions. UT staff, student volunteers and
team leaders are working to get everything ready for your arrival and
welcome. We are excited about serving you!

Let me know if you have questions.
