"Of Mountains, Caves, and People: Landscape and Identity in Classic
Maya Texts and Images"
Alexandre Tokovinine
"This presentation addresses the questions of how Classic Maya
represented their landscape and how they identified themselves in
relation to certain places. I discuss what written narratives and
images can tell us about the Classic Maya notions of place and
community. I also present some evidence suggesting that, although the
Classic Maya world was divided into dozens of independent kingdoms,
these kingdoms saw themselves as parts of larger geopolitical groups
based on shared identities."
