Back in January 2008, Rick Slazyk was part of the team that brought
you the basics of Maya architecture in Part 2 of our educational
series, Maya 101. Now we move forward at light-speed to Rick
presenting an overview of architectural style and innovation at sites

“Geology of Central America and the Mayalands”
with Joaquín J. Rodriguez III, P.E. SCBE

The Mayalands are part of one of the most dramatic and varied of all
geological areas on our planet. The movements behind plate tectonics,
volcanoes and the effects of an ancient meteor crash are key to the
understanding of geology in the Mayalands. The Maya utilized all of
the vast geological resources available to their great advantage.
They include, but are not limited to, stone for building materials;
soils for agriculture, obsidian, flint and cert for tools and
weapons; clays for ceramics; and green and blue jadeite for the fine
sculpture and jewelry that they fashioned.
