Listeros,
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the
death of Bill Sanders, who died Wednesday night from complications related to a
serious fall he had a few days ago. Dr. Sanders was Evan Pugh
Professor Emeritus of Anthropology here at Penn State. His impact on
Mesoamerican Archaeology cannot be understated. Dr. Sanders is best known for
his research in the Basin of Mexico, but over his 50 year career excavated or
visited dozens of sites from Honduras to Central Mexico. He was an active
archaeologist until the end, a staple at SAA meetings, and was still teaching
the occasional course at Penn State until a couple of years ago. I was
fortunate to have been a student in one of his last classes, a course on
Mesoamerican Warfare he co-taught with David Webster. He will be sorely missed.
