[Aztlan] "SECRET CAVE" under Teotihuacan Sun Pyramid

Hi All!

I just got home from a 10-day trip through Guatemala, so I really can't get into much here right now.

This project is my husband's (Alejandro Sarabia), and the press never really gets the story right.  For one thing, the "cave" under the Sun Pyramid was proven by a team of Geologists/Geomorphologists/Volcanologists brought from the UNAM by Dr. Linda Manzanilla to be a TUNNEL, not a cave, dug out by the Teotihuacanos.  It was looted in ancient times, possibly by the later Aztecs.

By the same token the tunnel has not been a secret since it was rediscovered by modern investigators (can't quite remember if it was late 60's, but I'm thinking early 70's).

Also, we don't know which was put up/in first:  The tunnel or the pyramid.

My husband hopes to answer a lot of interesting questions with this exploration.  His Assistant P.I. is Saburo Sugiyama, who, as I'm sure you all know is a pioneer in his own right here at Teo.  Between the two of them I think some neat information will come out of it.

As far as I know, about the only thing they are going to do in the tunnel is make test pits and take some samples of the mud that was covering the walls that the Teotihuacanos used to block up the tunnel at points along its route (we don't know the reason for the blockage).

Having just gotten back, I'm trying to catch up on my work, and my husband is overwhelmed with his own work as Site Director.  If I hear anything new from him about this, I will let you all know.

P.S.  He has an article in this month's Arqueología Mexicana about the hundred years since the undertaking of the project on the Pyr. of the Sun.  There may be more info. there.
