A couple of articles analyzing the "Dynasty Pots",
along with questions and problems for self-study, are now online at
http://www.traditionalhighcultures.com/Mayan_Downloads.html
Click on item #6. Good images of these pots are available in Justin Kerr's
Maya Vase Database
http://research.famsi.org/kerrmaya.html
Type "dynasty" into the "Look for: ..." box.

Because of the "Snake" Emblem Glyph,
these pots are thought to be from the same polity which later uses that EG,
namely Calakmul. Some of the ruler names are the same,
even if dates of accession are not, so they may be namesakes.
Some believe these pots, though produced later, repeat a text
from a time frame substantially earlier than our classic monumental texts.

Because we have several pots attesting to at least the beginning portions
of the same sequence of rulers, we can attempt to treat these sources
as like a set of manuscripts all deriving from a single original.
It is possible to study which pots are most similar to each other in
artistic execution, in text content (variants of calendar rounds, etc.),
and which ones have more obvious ungrammatical or erroneous sections.

For those who work on understanding glyphic texts,
you will grow stronger if you analyze these as much as you can on your own
first,
then after that read some of the articles published on this topic,
and then attempt to revise your own analyses.

Both the Philadelphia and the Washington DC glyph groups are starting to
work on Calakmul and related texts. Any additional ideas and resources
will be appreciated by both groups (and will be relayed to them if you
send them to the sender of this message).

A bibliography is being started of articles and books on Calakmul,
to help with this important site, and to help people prepare for the
yearly meeting in Austin February23 to March 1, 2009.
This is as yet very rudimentary.
Gentle readers are encouraged to send further items to be added to it,
and a list of thank-you credits will of course be added for that.
We may also benefit from a listing of all references to Calakmul
at other sites. That also will be started before long.

Best wishes,
