Listeros,

A 1000 year old mummy has been uncovered in Peru with scarlet paint,
metal eye plates and a tattoo. He is an elite male in his thirties
and was found with slingshots, corn and a figurine dressed like him.
The male belonged to the Chancay culture which spanned 1000-1500 CE.
The corncob lined tomb is untouched and was found in the farming
village of Rontoy. The mummy was wrapped in finely woven textiles
with several layers of offerings. In one layer was were two balls of
white cotton on the left and right side and in another layer, the
same two cotton ball offering. He had an empty bag and a loop of yarn
in his right hand. Corncobs and kernels were in all layers. The
slingshots were found around his knees and waist and next to his head
was a foot long wooden figurine dressed just like the mummy.
On the mummies right knee is a black tattoo. There was silver as an
offering and he wore a necklace of silver beads on a cotton string.
Red paint of mercury sulfide covers his face and copper and silver
metal cover each eye and in between his teeth. He has been
disembowled probably to preserve the mummy. His cause of death is
still being investigated but it does not appear violent.
The fact that this elite burial took place in a midsize agricultural
settlement attests to Chancay regional control in north-central Peru.
Another powerful culture, the Chimor, lived close by on the coast and
they traded with and influenced each other.
