questions re: Taino Carib technology
Greetings!
I am working on an article on pre-Columbian Taino and Carib weaponry and warfare including social and religious context. I would like to ask the listeros assistance with the following questions:
-- I remember reading somewhere about the Carib using some type of chemical warfare weapon, which I recall was some type of clay pot with smoldering ajies or hot peppers and other noxious weeds to create a type of tear gas. However, I am not able to find the reference in any of my sources. I seem to recall that this was recorded by an early European chronicler, but not sure.
-- I also would appreciate any feedback on the use of stone-tipped darts, arrows and spears by the Taino and Carib. Most of the references I have indicate that both peoples used bone, shell, fish teeth and/or spines, or hardened wood to tip their throwing weapons. The only reference I have found to a stone tip was a Taino chert arrowhead recovered in situ in Jamaica. I was wondering if it would be accurate to conclude that the Taino, and presumably the Carib, did in fact produce stone tipped darts and arrows, but preferred other materials. How common are stone arrowheads, etc. at Taino/Carib sites? Any clarification and references would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance for your assistance!
Sincerely,
Francisco J. Gonzalez
