Mammals - *Jaguatirica* - Leopardus pardalis
Class: Mammalia; order: Carnivora; family: Felidae; gender: Leopardus
Animal threatened with extinction, the ocelot was found throughout Brazil.
Their habitats include tropical forests, the Caatinga, the Cerrados the
Amazonas and the Pantanal.
They are the biggest cats-the-jungle of Brazil. Like ounces, the weight and
size vary depending on the habitat, and the type and quantity of food
available.
Feed itself with small mammals such as deer, baby, pacas, agoutis, preás,
and small birds. In lack thereof, also preda lizards, small snakes, frogs
and fish. This diet is a flexible feature of the ocelot. Hunt at night and
during the day, tend to sleep in hollow trees and caves.
Another peculiarity was observed adaptation of the feline degraded
environments, including very close to cities, where they can feed itself
with meat.
Each pregnancy can vary from 70 to 85 days (IUCN, 1996) and usually born
only one offspring. His weaning occurs between 8 and 10 weeks and growth is
slow.
The danger of extinction of ocelot is due to the high commercial value of
their skin and the illegal capture and sell. The black market was (and still
is) powered by custom adopted in many countries of transforming it into the
exotic animal pets.
For its small size and its beauty, the small zoos (especially the illegal
ones) were less difficulty in keeping them in captivity. In areas where
their natural habitat has the pressure of man, end their natural prey,
began to attack domestic animals. To defend their creations, ranchers pushed
the indiscriminate hunting the animal.
In Brazil, its hunting is prohibited, despite the trafficking persists,
mainly in the Northeast.
