  Yes, I know, Sid, and basically I share your point of view. But... 
  don`t you think that,  as well as an anthropologist must respect the customs of the communities that he visits, ...  we must respect the magic thought of the professional scientists? ;)

Who discovered what often times is an exercise in futility and more often
than not points out which of the following is active (if not both) and which
has the stronger affect upon the decision. But it seldom has anything to do

A. "Golden Rule" - He who has the gold is the 'discover'.

Was it Pedro de Acevedo or Columbus who discovered America? Well, who had
the Gold? Closer to home, for example, who found the Rio Azul cacao pot?

In the corporate setting and, for that matter, in the academic laboratory
(field or otherwise) the discovers sign their discoveries or patents away
either formally as part of their contract/gold and/or just for the chance to
bring home the bacon. That's the way it works and very few are anxious to
set the record straight.
B. "Publish or Perish" - Sometimes the 'discoverer' is the first to
publish or perhaps who publishes to the widest audience.

Strange as it may seem, this is 'true' until such time as it is not true.

There is nothing intellectually or philosophically sound about either
scenario, it is just the way it is. At some time the 'truth' is improved
upon but seldom found.
