[Aztlan] Trip to Mexico (Chiapas)

Here's my Tikal suggestion.
I always come from the Chiapas side. Go to San Cristobal (see above),
take the bus to Palenque, see the ruins, and stay in Xibalba as David
said. But be aware that the archaeologist in the family that owns it
(Alfonso Morales) is living in the Yucatan now and is rarely around.
Book a package trip to Flores. They will pick you up at your hotel,
take you by van to Frontera Corozal (same route as to Yaxchilan) and
put you on a boat upriver, the opposite way from Yaxchilan, across to
Bethel, Guatemala. A van picks you up there and takes you to Flores.
In Flores stay at the cheap and dumpy Casa Lacandon, in the back and
upstairs where there is a spectacular view of the lake, boats, and the
site of Tayasal on the peninsula opposite. From there, bus or van to
El Remate, on the other end of the lake. Stay at any of the hotels
there (Casa del Don David is my pick for the restaurant, and the owner
is my tocayo), again take a very early van to Tikal from outside your
hotel.
Yes, you could fly to Flores, go straight to the ruins and stay at one
of the (more expensive) hotels on site. But this gets you San
Cristobal, Palenque, the Usumacinta River, and all the land between
(Tonina, Bonampak, Yaxchilan are all options on the route). Total bus,
van, and boat expenses described above are in the $60 range one way.
I am writing this in San Cristobal, having just come back from
Palenque, Flores, Piedras Negras. I'll show some footage from this
trip (and several aothers) at U Penn museum Pre-Columbian Society this
Saturday.
Que les vaya bien!
