Charles Mann has an excellent summary of current thinking on syphilis in
New World-Old World contexts in a short Appendix titled "The Syphilis
Exception" in his book 1491: New Revelations of the Americas before
Columbus. He also provides fascinating and accurate background
information on the entire Amerindian health situation throughout the
book.
