[Aztlan] Mayan Higher learning

Dear Mario and Friends,
This is a challenging and interesting question, but, I am afraid, that the
answers are speculative. We have struggled with this question in the Maya
Vase Workshop for some time trying to ascertain how the iconography on the
codex style vases, for example, was passed from artist to artist.
The closest we can come to some possible answer is to place ourselves in
front of the scribe's house (Sepulturas, Copan) (see 7357b in Portfolio) and
imagine we sit at the foot of a Master Scribe who teaches us with words and
images the complexities of the script and the images of the gods.
The passing of the stories that we now know as the Popol Vuh and other tales
from one generation to the next may have one of the duties of a group of
individuals know as the Aj K'hun. They appear in many palace scenes
seemingly talking or listening to an elite person.
There is no definite proof that any of this happened but it may be a lead to
further studies.
Justin

Subject: [Aztlan] Mayan Higher learning
Mis Amigos: Did the Maya or any other Meso-American peoples have Libraries?
How was knowledge passed and who controlled the knowledge? Did they have
schools for higher learning and was there ever a city or location that
served this purpose? Help in answering these questions will be greatly
appreciated, thank you, Mario Malo
