Jules (et al.)--  To answer your question without citing dates (which  
I don't have at hand), the evidence for slash-and-burn agriculture  
comes from pollen and charcoal.  The coincidence of rapid changes in  
the composition of forest vegetation-- decreasing tree pollens and  
increasing pollens from the kinds of plants that invade cleared land-- 
plus increasing charcoal deposits, suggests clearing and burning.   
There are a number of sites where this kind of information has been  
analyzed, although I can't cite any of the sources off hand.

mano), la evidencia de agricultura tipo roza y quema se encuentra en  
los restos de polen y carbón.  La coincidencia de cambios rápidos en  
la composición de plantas en el bosque--menos polen de los árboles  
grandes, más polen de las especies que invaden terrenos cultivados-- 
aunado a cantidades de carbón en el suelo, sugiere la práctica de  
agricultura roza y quema.  Hay varios sitios donde se han hecho  
estudios de este tipo, pero yo no tengo a mano las fuentes.
