Listeros,
A 1,100 year old 45 foot canoe constructed by the Weeden Island
culture of Florida has worked its way to the surface. It was carved
from a single pine tree and was used to paddle over the open waters
of the bay for long distance trade. This is the first Pre-Columbian
sea going vessel uncovered in Florida.
The canoe will eventually be excavated and chemically preserved and
until then, it sits in an undisclosed location beneath a layer of
muck shoveled onto it to preserve it for now.
