Mario,
Cranial deformation is a common practice throughout all of the
Americas from the far north to Tierra del Fuego. It was practiced by
people in Central Asia as well so there may be a long term very
ancient tie to Asian customs in the American variants found here-
though it is a global phenomena.
The Maya carried out the same kind of sloping forehead cranial
deformation as you described being carried out in the more northerly
Americas. Sloping foreheads were also created in the ancient Andes
and among an Ancient Southwest culture known as the Gallina. There is
a lot of cranial deformation that took place in the Pacific northwest
area and across the area north of the Rio Grande into the Eastern US.
Below are two articles with info on cranial deformation north of the
Rio Grande. A close reading of these articles will lead you to the
sections on cranial deformation.
