Hi Mario,
In this article, Chaco cranial deformation is discussed even though
the article on the Gallina culture said it was rare in the Southwest.
It appears it was not rare there, and then goes on to talk about more
cranial deformation customs moving east. It is an older article but
presumably accurate.
Types of Artificial Cranial Deformation in the Eastern United States
Georg K. Neumann American Antiquity, Vol. 7, No. 3 (Jan., 1942), pp.
306-310 (article consists of 5 pages) Published by: Society for
American Archaeology
And this one talks about cranial deformation among the Adena;
The Origin of the Adena Culture of the Ohio Valley Albert C.
Spaulding Southwestern Journal of Anthropology, Vol. 8, No. 3
(Autumn, 1952), pp. 260-268 (article consists of 9 pages) Published
by: University of New Mexico
And there are references to cranial deformation among most
Mississippian Cultures from the Caddoans in Texas all the way through
the Mississippian heartland.
Since the Adena preceded the Mississippians and were to the east of
the main Mississippian sites, we can presume a very long antiquity
for this practice among the people of the Americas.
