Folks:

A few days ago I claimed that K1253 was Ursa Minor, but it was not put on line because I mentioned an old Sky Chart that showed Ursa Minor as a rat with a long rat tail and tiny feet instead of a bear form.

It bothered me that I was missing something and I did not know what it was. Today, I took another look at K1253 and was a bit surprised that I could have missed the obvious.

The Little Dipper (Ursa Minor) is on the chest of the Rat dressed with a Jaguar ear and flaming tail and Jaguar gloves, replete with claws. The third star of the handle is at the crease of the chest but, interestingly enough, the larger star of the Little Dipper is at the top outer edge is a larger dot on the rat's chest.(or is it his stomach?, just below the crease.).just like my star chart in Nightwatch by Terence Dickinson (1998 version).

The star chart I originally saw was in Sesti's The Glorious Constellations.. . . . . apparently it was done by someone who knew both cultures. That of drawing out a star configuration and that of drawng out an animal form (without the Jaguar accoutrements.). It could have been a later copy of an earlier chart. Things like that were done when books were copied by hand for special libraries. So it would not have been a big deal for a copy artist to "add" a little spice to his chart at any time during a later rendition.
