The 6th Palenque Round Table Announced
From November 16th to 21st 2008, the 6th Palenque Round Table will
take place. It is considered the most important academic gathering
worldwide on regard of Maya culture, which during 3,000 years
extended its power from the contemporary Mexican southeastern region
to Honduras.
The forum organized by the National Institute of Anthropology and
History (INAH), through the National Coordination of Archaeology,
will congregate near 70 national and foreign researchers in Palenque
Archaeological Zone, Chiapas. Details of the program will be
presented on Wednesday November 5th 2008.
Among the activities, outstand conferences of invited investigators,
the presentation of Palenque Prize 2008 and - important incentive for
the study on the Mayan culture, and a tribute to Ian Graham, Mayanist
of Harvard University.
The cycle, originally denominated Palenque Round Table, arose by
initiative of the American archaeologist Merle Greene Robertson, who
in 1973 took care of reuniting investigators interested in the Maya
area with the purpose of discussing the particular problematic.
Results obtained were divulged in diverse publications, raising
interest gradually between experts around the world, becoming one of
the academic meetings of greater tradition and importance regarding
Maya region.
National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) undertook the
leading role in 1995 of the Palenque Round Table’s organization,
acquiring a more institutional character as well as projection at an
international level.
The first INAH organized Palenque Round Table was in 1995, being “War
Among Ancient Mayas” the main subject. Outstanding researchers of
national and international level participated, including figures such
as Linda Schele and Peter Mathews.
2nd Palenque Round Table took place in 1997, being the main theme
“Architecture and Ideology of Ancient Mayas”. The 3rd table’s subject
was “Social Organization of Mayas”, taking place in1999, in memoriam
of Linda Schele, who passed away that year.
The 4th took place in 2002, with the theme “Funerary Cult in Maya
Society”., to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the
tomb of Pakal. The 5th Palenque Round Table was inaugurated in June
of 2004, under the title “The Maya Territory”. It was dedicated to
the brilliant trajectory of Beatriz de la Fuente.
Memories of each encounter have been published by INAH, and
coordinated by Silvia Trejo, Vera Tiesler Blos, Rafael Cobos, Merle
Greene Robertson and Rodrigo Liendo Stuardo.
