Listeros,

In Robert Stevenson¹s classic study ŒMusic in Aztec and Inca Territory¹
(1968), though he keeps an open mind on this subject and quotes documents
showing that the marimba Œenjoyed the reputation of being a typical
instrument of the Guatemalan Indians¹ as early as 1680, his conclusion is
that the evidence pointing to a Mesoamerican origin of the marimba is so
sparse that Œ[until further proof is forthcoming] the marimba must continue
to be regarded as an instrument of African origin¹ (p.66).
