[Aztlan] Vase K594 and the Origin of the Marimba

Dear Friends,
I have been away from my desk or I would have chimed in sooner. The article
in question on K594 is a litter, sometimes characterized as a hammock, and
yes there are a number of scenes from highland vessels which are basically
the same except they are by different artists. The litter is also
illustrated on a mold-made whistle which can be seen. It is number 7822 in
the Precolumbian portfolio (http://research.mayavase.com/kerrportfolio.html)
I wrote an article on these scenes which can be found at
www.mayavase.com/jour/journey.html, Elin Danien disagrees with my
conclusions, but maybe we can discuss this theme at the next Maya Weekend at
Penn.
The Jaguar Cushions that Karen mentions may be akin to his (the individual
being carried in the litter) medicine bundle and seems to have some
relationship to the construction of some of the forms of the "way" glyph.

There are a series of vessels with similar scenes to K594. Elin Danien
published an article on these vessels many years ago. Two that are
directly pertinent to the discussion are K5534 and K7613. In all three
of these scenes, the person in question is carrying a jaguar cushion.
These cushions show up in numerous throne scenes as well. The other guys
in the procession are carrying rattles and trumpets.
By the way, if anyone is interested in seeing Lynn Grant's magnificent
restoration of K594, they should check out Elin Danien's Chama exhibit
that opens next April at the University Museum.
