May I point out that in discussing unusual Maya musical instruments, one
might study K5233. There are two unusual instruments, the friction drum and
a gourd with horizontal cuts that resembles a modern "rasca".
There is a link on the page to an article by John A. Donahue that describes
in detail the workings of this instrument.

Subject: Re: [Aztlan] Maya Acoustics and Unusual Percussion Instruments
I just stumbled accross this masters thesis on ancient Maya musical
instruments: "Ancient Maya Music Now With Sound" by Cameron Bourg (2005).

sis.pdf
His thesis provides a much needed update to the subject, incorporating
comments regarding the San Bartolo murals, archaeological discoveries at
Jaina, Aguateca, Piedras Negras, and a general background on the
classification and documentation of ancient Maya instruments.
Enjoy.
