Saludos,

Clearly they do not contain the narrative aspects of the Maya, but twins,
the Underworld, and substantial maize associations are present and clearly
depicted among the Early and Middle Formative period Olmec sculpture of the
Southern Gulf Coast.

Then, may I ask, why do so many images from the Early Classic and Late
Classic periods exist that refer to themes that are found in the Popol Vuh.
If these stories were imported from Central Mexico, then the Mexicans must
have imported them first from areas where the stories of the Popol Vuh were
alive and well. I doubt that people from Central Mexico carved the stela of
Izapa or painted the vases of Naranjo or Calakmul.

To me this question seems fairly simple. Most of the iconography
("ancient glyphs") comes from the Classic Maya. The stories of the
Popul Vuh are likely an intrusion from Central Mexico in the
Post-Classic, at least according to Graulich. So the two mythic
traditions are not contemporaneous. The stories of the Popul Vuh seem
to have reached the Maya region several centuries after the decline of
the Classic period.
