Listeros,
Tonight I was watching the Encore special about Mayan architecture. In one segment they showed Tikal via computer reconstruction done in red pigment. There was something else that caught my eye. On top of most of the buildings.was a rectangular structure looking like a flat screen display. I immediately remembered a paragraph from one of Michael Coe's books describing stones disks carved in concave shape. According to Coe these discs were used as a camera obscura. He suggested there would have been great light and sound shows. There has been lots of discussion here about acoustical properties on the Mayan sites. I have seen these properties displayed as tourist oddities at cahal pech,Tikal,Tollum,,Caracol,. and Chichen itza. Maybe we've missed something right under our nose. Just maybe the Maya also had visual displays for communication and ceremonies as well as acoustical capabilities.
Your thoughts
