Blaize,

Dave undoubtedly worked from Theobert Maler's photograph of PN Stela  
3.  The early large-format plates by Maudslay and Maler  in most  
cases preserve much more detail than the worn monuments themselves do  
today.  They were made just after stelae were unearthed and before  
they had had a century's exposure to jungle weather.
