[Aztlan] References for Problems with Early Classic Glyphs

Dear Listeros

I am trying to track down articles dealing with Early  
Classic/Proto-Classic Mayan writing. Specifically, I am looking for  
discussions as to the form, nature, and problems with translating  
these early glyphs.

I have found some recent articles on the San Bartolo murals that  
mention the "the opaque nature of early Maya writing" (Houston  
2006:1249) but no articles detailed explanations as to the nature or  
reasons for this opacity in Early writng.

As I am relatively new to the world of "Mayan epigraphy/iconography" I  
am unsure if the articles exist in journals/books that I am not  
finding, or if the issue has never been clearly discussed.

As I have been searching for the past month with little success any  
leads or references on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
