Hi Kim,
I think that what you are talking about is the weathering that happens
when a stationary rock comes into contact with the earth's atmosphere.
There are several kinds of weathering, including physical and
chemical. This is not "erosion" -- the weathering that happens with
the movement of water or wind across the stone. Here is a simple but
useful Wikipedia page on the subject:
