I recall George Stuart describing in one of his books that the Hmen who performed this ceremony were doing so in hopes of appeasing Chac so that He did not become angry for the violation of Sacred Space. Apparently Chac was either very angered, or cleansed the area after the ceremony (depending on your point of view), because there was a deadly hurricane right after the Hmen finished their ceremony and returned above ground.
