We are working to get registration set up for the 2009 Maya Meetings. 
Hopefully soon, participants will be able to register online or download 
paper forms to send in.

 

I have been getting requests from people who want to know the topics and 
speakers for the Symposium, Keynote Address, and the Workshops.

 

The following are tentative, but probable:

 

Symposium topics are Calakmul and La Corona (Serpent Emblem Glyph polities).

 

Probable Symposium speakers are Simon Martin, University of Pennsylvania 
Museum; Tomas Barrientos Quezada, Universidad del Valle Guatemala; 
Antonio Benavides Castillo, Centro INAH Campeche; Stanley Guenter, 
Southern Methodist University; Ivan Sprajc, Institute of Anthropological 
and Spatial Studies Scientific Research Centre / Solvenian Academy of 
Sciences & Arts; Nikolai Grube, Institut fur Altamerikanistik und 
Ethnologie / Universitat, Bonn, Germany; and Erik Velasquez Garcia, 
Instituto de Esteticas, UNAM.

 

The Keynote Address speaker is Gary Urton. The topic is Quipus.

 

Workshops for 2009 are

1)    Marc Zender and Danny Law, Beginning English Maya Glyphs

2)    Stanley Guenter and Barbara MacLeod, Intermediate Maya Glyphs 
(Topic still undecided)

3)    John Justeson and Terry Kaufman, Special Problems in Advanced 
Linguistics: The Zapotec

4)    Erik Velasquez Garcia, Beginning (4.1) and Intermediate (4.2) 
Spanish Maya Glyphs

5)    Justin Kerr, Iconography of Maya Painted Vases

6)    Bruce Love, Northern Yucatan Inscriptions, Maya Codices, and Books 
of Chilam Balam

8)    Allen Christenson: Special Topic: Popul Vuh

 

The meetings will be held at the AT&T Executive Education and Conference 
Center, 1900 University Avenue, Austin, Texas, near the UT campus. 
Contact them at (877) 744-8822 to reserve your room. Be sure to let them 
know that you are with the Maya Meetings. Make note of your confirmation 
number because you will need it to get a Maya Meeting registration 
discount through TXShop at http://www.utmaya.org/ OR, if using a paper 
form to register, write the confirmation number in the box at the bottom 
of the Registration Payment Form.

 

Participants staying at the AT&T Hotel must stay a minimum of 3 nights 
for a discount on Conference fees. Please be aware that there are a 
limited number of rooms available at the conference room rate of $125 
per night plus 15% hotel tax. The regular AT&T hotel room rate is $250 
per night plus 15% hotel tax.

 

Note that the registration fees are now tiered.

Early Registration discount is available through Tuesday, January 20, 2009.

 

Early Registration with AT&T registration discount:

 

4 ½ day specialized Workshop (Monday, Feb 23, through noon, Friday, Feb 
27, 2009): $150

 

Weekend events, Keynote Address, Reception, and Symposium (Friday 
evening, Feb 27, through Sunday, March 1, 2009): $175

All Events: $300

 

Early Registration without AT&T registration discount:

4 ½ day specialized Workshop (Monday, Feb 23, through noon, Friday, Feb 
27, 2009): $185

Weekend events, Keynote Address, Reception, and Symposium (Friday 
evening, Feb 27, through Sunday, March 1, 2009): $200

All Events: $380

 

After Tuesday, January 20, 2009, there is no AT&T discount and the 
registration rates go up.

 

Students currently enrolled and Volunteers get special discounts.
