“Visualizing the Sacred: Images of ‘Gods’ and ‘Idols’ in Colonial Aztec Manuscripts”

Images of indigenous gods and Pre-Columbian ritual sacrifices fill lavishly-illustrated manuscripts created in sixteenth-century Mexico by native manuscript painters collaborating with Spanish Christian friars. This presentation investigates these manuscripts as complex, cross-cultural documents that describe Pre-Columbian Aztec ritual activities and notions of the sacred in ways simultaneously meaningful to Christian European missionaries and empowering to native Aztec subjects.
