It is such a great research, it really shows a valid perspective about the
petroglyphs.  And I think that in the case of Costa Rica, it is a solid
Proof about the meaning of the petroglyps.  However, in the case of
Nicargua, in the specific area of the great islands (Ometepeque, Zapatera),
maybe they has some religion meanings, taking in count that Zapatera was a
cemetery.  
  
Anyway, I really appreciate too much the information you gave to me.

As I understand it, the petro-glyphs in Eastern Nicaragua, Costa Rica and
Panamá are not at all related to Maya Glyphs. At least in the sense that
they're not a writing system, certainly not phonetic. Symbolic yes, but not
designed to be strung together or in columns or anything like that. More a
system to represent topographical features. The locals refer to them as
"Mapas de Indios". I suspect some of them were used as just that, travelers
would interpret them and know, let's say, to go up this ridge and then turn
left after the waterfall to find so-and-so village. Perhaps neighbouring
groups would use them to establish territorial limits and thus keep them
clear over generations, good fences make good neighbours. The simple
examples might just be territorial markers.
