[Aztlan] Whirlpools/Pantitlan

Hi All!

This really doesn't have to do with hurricanes, but the hurricane thread brought something up in my mind that I have been wondering about for years.

Somewhere I read that the Mexica used to canoe out into the lake in the Pantitlan area and throw offerings into "whirlpools" at a certain spot.  Does anybody know what would happen to things thrown into a whirlpool?  Would they stay at the bottom and gradually get silted over, or would undercurrents spread them to different areas of the lake?

The reason I ask is because I have always hoped that maybe somewhere out there near Pantitlan there are some interesting caches waiting to be stumbled upon.
