Hi Jorge
Of course it is important to give credit.
I'm an illustrator, I like to get credit for my work, however humble it may be.
My question to you is why any people interested in Maya Culture were never given this info in 1995?
INAH have their politics, Say nothing, let no one in. Use tomb raiding or conservation as an excuse.
As I often travel the Yucatan Peninsula, especially Quintana Roo, I was aware of this site for several years. I never thought much about it, as I knew it was well overgrown and had nothing visual to offer and no way of getting to the site itself.
I stopped by INAH in Chetumal to ask about this site, no response. In addition, could I go and visit Chacchoben and do some drawings. They told me it was impossible... A year later, I happened to pass by Chacchoben, only to find a parking lot full of buses bringing cruise ship tourists from Mahahual to visit the site.
I am acutely aware of the cruise line business and find nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to making $$$. However, my concern is that Ichkabal becomes another 'planned' tourist site before we laypeople with interest are allowed to visit.
Is cruise ship tourism the answer to funding Maya sites?
Your thoughts.
Regards
Steve Radzi
